Hire a Professional

Client story

A recent client, Jane (not her real name) wished to discover to learn about family history beginning with her husband’s grandparents, and great grandparents. Having no idea where to look, she asked for help. First, I searched records and discovered one set of great-grandparents and their children. The documents introduced her to more family members.  Second, I searched for the grandparents. However, they came from an area beyond my expertise (Russia). She could decide to find someone with the expertise in Russian records, or trust me to learn about the records.  She choose to let me learn more about Russian records. Through resources online, I was able to locate her Russian connection, and find some of the family ancestors there.

Insidentally, knowing what records to search may take years to discover. Many sources need to be searched on original microfilm, or at repositories. Some may be indexed part way, but your ancestor’s name has not been indexed yet.  There are many reasons why you have not found your ancestor.  For instance, the records may have been destroyed by fire, or floods. Alternate records may need to be searched. Hence, a professional genealogist can help with their knowledge of where and how to search.

If you need help locating your ancestor and discover your family, we may be able to help. If not, I make suggestions for people who have expertise in the area needed.

What is your Goal for Family History research?

So, what exactly do you wish to learn through my research help? To hire a genealogist, it’s important to have a specific goal. Do you want to find a specific person, parents of a person, or their children? The more specific you are about your goal the better a researcher will know how to help you.

  • First, write down what you wish to learn.
  • Second, write down what you already know.

Next, once you know your research objective or goal, you are ready to ask for help. Some research may not take many hours, but expect to pay for a minimum of 10 hours. Often, 20 hours of research works better and may provide more thorough results.

However, additional fees may be required for birth or death certificates. The amount depends on the repository holding the documents. Travel time to search repositories can be discussed as needed. Sometimes, a researcher can be hired to go to a local repository in locations where the records are not online. Fees vary and can be discussed if necessary.
